Story · 4 parts
When Yahweh commands Moses to avenge Israel against Midian before he dies, twelve thousand men march out with Phinehas carrying the holy vessels, kill every male, burn the cities, and return with captives, livestock, and plunder — whereupon Moses rebukes the officers for sparing the women who caused Israel's sin at Peor, orders those women and all male children killed, and Eleazar prescribes the purification rites before any warrior may re-enter the camp; only then does Yahweh direct Moses to divide the spoils between warriors and congregation, and the officers bring a voluntary offering of sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels of gold to the Tent of Meeting as a memorial.
