The First Round of Speeches

Three friends — Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar — each press Job to admit hidden sin, insisting God never punishes the innocent; each time Job refuses, describing a God so overwhelming that no mortal could argue with him fairly, and longing for someone to stand between them so he could speak without terror — until at last Job resolves to bypass his friends entirely and bring his case straight to the Almighty, whatever the cost.
