King Zedekiah summons Jeremiah to a secret meeting and hears him urge surrender, but the city's princes are so enraged by Jeremiah's message that they throw him into a muddy cistern to die — until a palace servant named Ebed-melech persuades the king to let him haul Jeremiah out with rags and cords; when the walls are finally breached Zedekiah flees, is overtaken, watches his sons killed, and is blinded and carried in chains to Babylon, the city burns and its people are marched into exile, while Jeremiah alone is released and left to live among those who remain.
