Jesus and the Sign of Jonah

This collection of Lukan controversy episodes moves through a healing, a Beelzebul accusation, Jesus's defense that his exorcisms signal God's kingdom arriving, a warning about spiritual emptiness, a bystander's praise and Jesus's reply that obedience matters more than bloodline, and finally a crowd demanding proof — to which Jesus answers that the only sign given will be the sign of Jonah: just as Jonah was a sign to Nineveh, so the Son of Man is a sign to this generation, and the Ninevites and the Queen of the South will one day rise to condemn those who refused someone greater than Jonah or Solomon.
