After God spares Nineveh, a furious Jonah complains that God's mercy was exactly what he feared, and wishes for death — prompting God to question whether his anger is justified.

The Sign of the Plant

After his angry exchange with God, Jonah leaves Nineveh and sits outside the city waiting to see what will happen. God grows a vine over him for shade, then sends a worm to destroy it; overwhelmed by the heat, Jonah again begs to die — and God seizes on that moment to press him: if Jonah grieves so deeply over a plant he never tended or brought to life, how can he begrudge God's concern for something far greater?
